Writing LabHow to Prompt a Human (v1)Humans have one enormous context

1. Humans have one enormous context window

A human has only one continuous conversation.

It begins at birth and ends at death.

Every conversation, embarrassment, friendship, failure, childhood memory, organizational trauma, compliment, and unpaid invoice enters the same context.

There is no clean session.

There is no incognito mode.

There is no button marked: Start new conversation without memories of the previous manager.

This gives humans something close to infinite context.

Unfortunately, retrieval is terrible.

A human may forget the project requirements you explained yesterday but remember, with perfect fidelity, an awkward comment made to them in 2008.

Their memory is not organized by relevance. It is organized by emotion.

When prompting a human, do not assume that the most important information will receive the highest attention weight. The sentence that matters to the project may disappear. The sentence that threatens their identity may remain active for twenty years.

Humans do not remember what you said. They remember how the interaction changed their internal state.
